The wake for Fr. Stephen Boyle will be held in St. Joseph's Chapel at Gate of Heaven on Monday 2PM - 5PM. Funeral Mass is at 11AM at Gate of Heaven Upper Church on Tuesday. Live-stream available below



Rev. Robert E. Casey


Fr. Casey was born in Boston, MA and raised in Milton and Dorchester, MA. The Son of Catherine (Kaveney) and John Casey, he is one of 7 children (Sr. Maureen, SND; John;  Jeannine; Kate; Paula and Patricia).  He attended St. Mark's and St. Gregory's Elementary School, Christopher Columbus Catholic High School in the North End, and received a B.A. in Biology from St. Anselm College, Manchester, NH in 1981.  He entered St. Anselm Abbey after graduation and was welcomed as Benedictine Monk until 1984 when he transferred to St. John's Seminary in Boston, and was ordained a priest in June of 1987 for the Archdiocese of Boston.  Before being appointed Pastor of St. Brigid Parish in early 2000 and Gate of Heaven Parish in 2002, Fr. Casey served as Team Minster at St. Joseph Parish and Sacred Heart Parish and later Holy Family Parish in Amesbury, as parochial vicar at St. Mary's Parish, Charlestown, and St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Medford, MA.  Fr. Casey was a Catholic Chaplain for the Medford Fire Department from 1987 to 1992 and Assistant Chaplian for the Boston Fire Department from 2004 - 2017 and has been Catholic Chaplain for the Medford Police Department since 1988.

Rev. Christopher Boyle

Parochial Vicar
Fr. Boyle was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Boston on May 18, 2019 by Cardinal Sean at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross. Raised on the South Shore, he is the fourth of 13 children of Arthur and Judith Boyle. He received a B.A. in communications from St. Joseph's College, Maine. Fr. Boyle taught and coached at Catholic Memorial High School, before entering St. John's Seminary for this priestly studies. He is an alumnus of the Pontifical North American College at Rome.

Monsignor Liam Bergin

Assisting Priest

Monsignor Liam Bergin has been priest-in-residence at our parishes since May 2012. A priest of the Diocese of Ossory, he is a native of Co. Laois (Ireland). He studied and taught in Italy for 24 years and served as rector of the Pontifical Irish College in Rome for 10 years until he came to Boston in 2011. During this time he was also a professor at the Pontifical Gregorian University, where he had earned a doctorate in sacred theology. He also holds a bachelor of science degree in mathematics and chemistry and a higher diploma in education.  In September 2014 he was named Professor of the Practice of Sacramental Theology at the Theology Department at Boston College having already been a visiting professor at the University for three years. Since arriving in Boston he has become an avid Red Sox fan!

Chance Hebert

Director of Religious Education and Coordinator of Catholic Identity

Chance is a graduate of Magdalen College of the Liberal Arts, in Warner NH, where he earned his BA in Theology. He recently finished a Master's in Pattrsitic theolgoy at the University of Oxford, UK, and is currenlty living in RI. In addditon to the responsiiblites listed above, Chance will also be leading the RCIA program as well as teaching a few classes in the grade-school.

Claire Banks

Tuition Coordinator, South Boston Catholic Academy

Mrs. Claire Banks is a graduate of Georgetown University where she received a degree in Accounting.  She went on to become a Certified Public Accountant, and worked for many years at a public accounting firm that specialized in Forensic Accounting.  Claire received her Masters in Business Administration from the University of Massachusetts in Boston.

Carolyn Martin

Music Director, Organist

Carolyn is our music director in the parishes. She plays all of the Sunday Masses, as well as weddings, funerals, and holy day services. Carolyn also directs the adult choir. If you're interested in joining the choir, email Carolyn at




Karin Cannata

Parish Secretary
Karin has recently taken over as Parish Secretary after Trish Strumm's retirement to spend more time with her family. Karin began working in the parish office in March 2017, after a career in fundraising in the non-profit sector. Karin and her family have lived in South Boston for over 10 years and have two school-aged children. Karin manages the parish office -- everything from baptisms to funerals, booking masses, etc. If you need assistance with anything regarding our parish please reach out.

Stephanie Buen Abad

Administrative Consultant
Stephanie joined the parish team in July 2017. A Pennsylvania native, she moved to Boston in 2013 to complete her Master's degree in Vocal Performance from the New England Conservatory, and is currently active as a cantor, choral singer, voice and piano teacher, Catholic TV personality, and Bible study leader. Find her in the parish office where she helps Karin keep things running!

Patrick Lyons


Pat is the custodian at Gate of Heaven and St. Brigid Parishes. Pat has been with the Parishes for more than 20 years! He is responsible for maintaining the courtyards and grass around the Parish grounds in the summer and removing snow during the winter.
