About Our Parishes & History

Welcome to our parish website!
Gate of Heaven Parish was established in 1863 and St. Brigid Parish was established in 1908. St. Brigid Parish was originally a mission Church of Gate of Heaven Parish. It was established as its own parish in 1908 in order to better serve the City Point neighborhood. Nearly 100 years later, the parishes reunited in collaboration to better serve this area of South Boston. Our joint efforts have allowed the parishes to offer a variety of programs, services, and resources to the community.

The two parishes have one administration that work together at the Gate of Heaven and St. Brigid Parish office at 841 East Broadway. We currently have two priests who reside at the St. Brigid/Gate of Heaven Rectory - Fr. Casey, Pastor; Fr. Karlo, Parochial Vicar. Monsignor Liam Bergin, a priest from Ireland and professor at BC, lives with them and assists throughout the week. Many priests from across the Archdiocese assist us in meeting the changing needs of our faith community.

Our parishes offer a variety of programs and sacramental preparations including: Confirmation, Marriage Preparation, CYO Basketball, Religious Education, Bible Study, Baptismal Preparation, St. Vincent de Paul Society, SBCA 1000 Club, Choir, and RCIA.

In addition, our parish school, South Boston Catholic Academy, provides a strong Catholic education for children from pre-school through grade 6. The school motto “Faith, Family, and Academic Excellence” is practiced daily in the classroom and through various extracurricular programs. The school is accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges. For more information or to enroll your child, contact the school at 617-268-2326 or visit their website.

As our parishes move forward together, we look forward to building on our rich history in order continue serving our faithful parishioners here in South Boston.

We hope you will take advantage of all our parishes have to offer. We invite you to join us on Sunday or at any parish event.
